Treatment and Prevention
To obtain the best results when treating specific pigeon diseases and undertaking preventive healthcare, it is often advisable to adopt supportive and/or complementary measures in addition to selective prophylactic and therapeutic preparations. This is particularly relevant in the case of racing pigeons, in view of the exceptional level of performance that they deliver. Our product range embraces drugs for specific treatment and prevention alongside the preparations that are recommended for the relevant supportive measures.
Please note the following:
- The Annual Preventive Plan is primarily intended to help you to schedule the necessary preventive measures appropriately into the pigeon-keeping year. The timing of the individual measures is based on many years of practical experience.
- The Treatment Plans are designed for treating both entire flocks and individual sick birds.
- It is possible that the older, legally required dosing instructions which appear on the packaging may sometimes differ from the more recent, field-tested dosages that are stipulated in the plans. If this is the case, be sure to follow the dosages stated in the plans.
- In the treatment plans, the days on which treatment is to be carried out are identified with letters. A "X" denotes medicines that are essential if the goal of the treatment is to be achieved. A "O" denotes preparations that can usefully be applied to support or supplement the treatment.
- The medicines are administered via the drinking water or feed, in capsule form or via injection.
- Treatment via the drinking water:
The solutions are prepared by dissolving the powder-based medication in a small quantity of water in a separate container (e.g. a bottle with a wide neck). Top this solution up to the stipulated volume and divide it among all of the drinking bowls.
Mixing different products together is not recommended. Only livimun® may be added to any other preparations in the drinking bowl. livimun® supports the treatment by stimulating natural resistance and eliminating bacteria that have already been damaged by a medicine.
The total volume of drinking water required by 20 racing pigeons is around 1 litre per day. If the pigeons drink more water (e.g. in hot weather), the medicated water should not be diluted. Instead, provide fresh water after it is finished. If pigeons refuse the medicated water, a little sugar or honey can be added to make it more palatable.
- Treatment via the feed:
Mix the contents of a sachet, or else the quantity specified for 40 pigeons, with 20 ml (= 1 dosing head) of vitin® in a cup until the powder is completely dissolved. Blend this mixture into the daily ration of grain for 40 pigeons (approx. 1,000 g), so that all of the grains are evenly covered. Keep this prepared feed refrigerated until it dries. It can then be given to the pigeons. A number of liquid medications see treatment plans) can be mixed directly with the feed.
- Administration of capsules:
Before administering the capsule, moisten it with edible oil. Introduce it through the opened beak, then gently massage the pigeon’s throat in the direction of the crop to help the capsule slide down smoothly.
- Injection of medicines:
It is recommended that injections are performed subcutaneously in the lower third of the neck region, with the needle pointing downwards and parallel to the cervical vertebrae.
